I, the law student at ALQUDS University and volunteer at Nahda Society since 5 years Ahd Bader, represented the Society in an international workshop about environmental and climate change and prevention methods. The workshop took place at ALQUDS International Hotel in Amman, Jordan with participation of several countries such as Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Sweden, Moldavia and Egypt, and I can say that participants formed a rather interesting mixture (donor organizations, donors, public institutions and unions from various countries and positions). The workshop lasted two days (12 + 13 October, 2011).
The first day started with an introduction among participants, work nature of their organizations, how far they are integrating environmental issues in their agendas and how interested they are in climate and environmental issues, where opinions varied from interested to very interested through some activities. Then, we were introduced to this workshop sponsor (Diakonia) and the financial financier (Sida), and the Lebanese environment specialist Nadia delivered a lecture on climate and environmental change, and negative impact on our lives and work. After that, we were divided into groups to discuss how to integrate environmental issues into our work in a virtual foundation inside a virtual country that suffers certain environmental issue and threat. Each of the three groups presented point of view and reasons that made them adopt this idea, and discussion was completed during the first hours of the second day (the agenda will be attached in addition to material presented during workshop to ensure accuracy of information).
Our participation in that workshop was very important to the Society as we always strive for the best and look for development in all social work fields, especially that we greatly deal with a very sensitive group (children and mothers). It is important in our perspective to achieve the best so that our activities reflect our rules, which significantly concentrate on children, as they constitute the fundamental ground and are affected by everything around them (ideas and daily life behavior). We always seek to provide them with the best and to educate them about everything they need to have good health and proper human thinking and attitude that maintain all standards of humanity. In turn, I, as the Society representative, declared our wish to integrate environmental projects in our agenda by saying: ‘from now on, we declare our Society environment-friendly, and we shall adopt systematic strategies to preserve environment, because it’s our right and our children right to live in clean environment that we make ourselves’.
Below are some strategies we will adopt in order to achieve our goal:
1- Concentrate on topics such as children hygiene by making the interested in this a daily routine that they practice without observers.
2- Rationalize consumption of water, electricity and other resources.
3- Form children and volunteer groups to hold sanity campaigns in our hometown as we used to in the past two years, but we will concentrate on them more in order to strengthen sense of affiliation in children and make them good citizens through advocacy, workshops and recreational activities that call upon environment preservation.
4- Continue work in the art room on recycle of disposable material such as plastic and glass, and make items cheerful to children instead of being utter junk.
5- Make children opt for healthy food that is free of preservatives and colorants through women’ kitchen at the Society, and replace them with fruit, vegetables and homemade food to preserve children health. I arrived in Abu Dees on Friday, October 14, 2011 after two days full of work, during which I obtained many benefits at all levels, and most importantly the establishment of social relationships with people from many countries and make use of their experience in many respects. I can say that this experience was more that wonderful, and I would like to thank whoever helped, nominated and supported me to participate in that workshop, and I wish I realized what you have been looking forward.
